Black Jesus Futz
Tamango The Wacky
World of Dr. Morgus
Black Jesus Woody Strode
1971 - Color - 90
minutes
Based on real-life incidents in the
Congo, "Black Jesus" chronicles the downfall of an African leader of
a national independence movement. Woody Strode plays Black Jesus, a
man betrayed by one of his followers and unwittingly martyred by the
men in power. Under a cruel interrogation, you watch the life begin
to drain out of Strode--his face ravaged with pain--his eyes
reflecting the horrors of the times. Long after the violence of the
film is forgotten, you will remember the look in Strode’s
eyes.
"Black Jesus has the impact of ‘Z.’
Strode should get the Academy Award."-- ABC-TV

Futz The Cafe La Mama Troupe
1969 - Color - 92
minutes
Tim O’Horgan--the director of the
original Broadway version of "Hair"--cut his metaphorical teeth on
bringing "Futz" to the screen. The plot includes pyromania, sex,
murder, incest, and transvestitism, not necessarily in that order.
In short, it’s about one man’s love for his pig. A Greek chorus
straight out of "Tobacco Road" salutes a final blood-slashed scene
that makes Steven King’s "Carrie" look like a TV ad for the American
Dairy Association and will leave you wondering if it’s possible to
cram any more outlandish behavior in ninety-two minutes of film.

Tamango Dorothy Dandridge, Curt Jurgens
1959 - Color - 98
minutes
This action adventure on the high seas
stars Curt Jurgens (Reinker) as the evil captain of a slave ship,
and Dorothy Dandridge as his willing mistress, Aiche. When the
slaves revolt, and take Aiche hostage, Reinker is forced to choose
between saving her or quashing the rebellion and possibly
sacrificing his lover. Critics claimed the picture would never be
shown due to its depiction of interracial love, especially
controversial in the turbulent Civil Rights period of the late
1950's, and the French government actually banned the film deeming
the love scenes "too suggestive." TAMANGO is a fascinating comment
on our changing times with a perfectly casting of Dandridge as the
tragic heroine.
"Way ahead of its time, and ripe for
rediscovery."-- 1998 Movie & Video Guide

The Wacky World of Doctor Morgus Sid Noel, Dan Barton
1962 - B/W - 87 minutes
Filmed in the back alleys and tacky cafes
of New Orleans--when the Beat Generation reined supreme--here's a
movie with both something to behold and an exercise that takes the
term "tongue in cheek" to new levels. Meet Doctor Morgus and his
sidekick Chopsely (an Igor-type in a black executioner’s hood), plus
Zelda (the good doctors comatose girlfriend), and join them as a
fiendish plot unfolds. Be amazed as the evil ruler of Microvania
plans to use one of the Doctor’s inventions (an "instant people
machine" that turns living beings into sand) for a takeover of the
United States. Enter ace reporter Pencils McCane to foil the
dastardly plot. The climax at the ribbon cutting of a new highway,
is just the final icing on a cake of humor that leaves "Plan 9 from
Outer Space" stuck at the starting gate. |
